Cyclone IDAI small livestock restocking programme yields positive results
In June 2020, pigad supported 350 Lead Farmers with Dual-purpose breeds Point of Lay hens and mature cocks under the Cyclone IDAI small livestock restocking programme. The supported Lead Farmers were required to pass on Day Old Chicks to at least 5 recipients.
James Sithole, a beneficiary of the pass-on scheme received 40 Day Old Boschveld Chicks. His flock has since grown to over 85 birds. His household commercialised the venture and are now selling fertilised eggs, day-old chicks and pullets. Incomes raised have gone towards paying for the children’s education and basic livelihood requirements. In total, the programme reached out to 2000 households including the 1st line beneficiaries
