Empowering smallholder farmers
pigad is supporting another 840 smallholder farmers in egg production through the provision of subsidized poultry business start-up packages, capacity building, and market linkages for sustainable poverty reduction and food security.
The subsidized start-up packages include standard fowl-run construction materials, Commercial Point of Lay birds, chicken feed, equipment, vaccines, and poultry management & business training. pigad is also supporting the farmer-centric umbrella organization “Smallholder Poultry Union” which has a membership of 5 300 poultry farmers. Additionally, the farmers are encouraged to start marketing groups in order to access the input and output markets through building synergies with local poultry value chain actors.
The project has a pure business approach and is being implemented within selected wards of Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East and Manicaland Provinces. The German Government is financing this project through the International NGO, Help from Germany
